The Iliotibial band (IT Band) is the long thick band of fascia going down the lateral side of the thigh surrounded by many muscles that often get overworked during physical activity.  It is important to develop the hip muscles, gluteal muscles, quadriceps and hamstrings to stabilize the legs and to prevent injury and pain in the IT Band.

Treatment for IT Band syndrome can come in various forms.  A few days of lighter activity may be required along with wearing a compression strap over the entire leg to provide temporary relief.  A foam roller can also provide relief to the IT Band by stretching out the fascia. A couple of 15 minute foam rolling sessions can help the IT Band be stretched and alleviate the pain caused by constant use of the legs.  A massage therapist will also be able to work on the fascia of the IT Band and can provide relief to the surrounding muscles that are also tight as well.
